Different Railway Zones in India – Indian Railways is operated and owned by the Government of India through the Railway Ministry. In India, Railways were first introduced in the year 1853 from Bombay to Thane. The systems were nationalized as one unit in the year 1951 with the name the Indian Railways which is now one of the largest rail networks in the world.
Divisions Of Railway Zones In India
Indian Railways is divided into 17 different zones, which are further sub-divided into sub-zone divisions. The number of railway zones in India raised from six to eight in 1951. It became nine in 1966 and then sixteen in 2003. Each railway zone in India consists of a certain number of divisions. Each division has a divisional headquarter of its own. There are sixty-eight divisions in total.
All railway zones in India are controlled by a general manager of their own, who directly reports to the Railway Board.
The latest addition to railway zones in India is Konkan Railways and it’s controlled by Railway Ministry and Railway Board.
