Rules for carrying Luggage in Indian Railways? 

According to instructions, there is no such restriction on carrying luggage or luggage carry limit in brake van of passenger trains in terms of quantity and type (merchandise or personal) of luggage offered for booking. However, under scale-L, luggage limit or the excess luggage beyond the free allowance in owner’s charge is charged at 1.5 times more rates.

Some free allowance is there for luggage limit for each passenger up to which he can carry luggage along with him in the travel compartment which is free of cost. This free allowance for luggage limit is different for different travel classes. Children from 5 to 12 years of age are allowed half of the free allowance and are allowed to carry a maximum of 50 Kgs of luggage carry limit. Adults are also permitted for a marginal allowance. There is a maximum limit of the luggage which we can carry inside the compartment of each class. These are indicated in the following table below:

Free allowance is included in the maximum  Luggage Limit.

Explosives, Offensive articles, dangerous inflammable articles and empty gas cylinders, dead poultry, acids and other corrosive substance are not permitted to be carried as luggage.

Patients under medical treatment certificate can be permitted to carry oxygen cylinder with its supporting stand in any class of travel. Oxygen cylinder and its supporting stand will be allowed in free allowance category of luggage.

No Merchandized items are allowed to be carried in the coach as personal luggage.

Larger dimensional luggage is allowed to be carried only in brake van. The minimum charge for luggage is Rs.30.
